Swarna Masuri rice is a renowned white rice variety originating from the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Known for its delicate aroma, short grains, and distinctive taste, Swarna Masoori rice has gained popularity as a staple in households. The rice derives its name from a combination of two words: “Swarna,” meaning gold, and “Masuri,” referring to the place of its origin, the Masuri region in Andhra Pradesh.
Kurinji and her father, a retired government employee from Pudukottai DT, their native, have been cultivating rice and legumes organically in Alangudi. They approached Goodness Farm to sell their organically cultivated rice. After testing for organic viability and nutritional value, we at Goodness Farm present Sona Masoori rice in it’s parboiled and unpolished form.
Organically cultivated Sona Masoori rice is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Our cultivators rely on natural methods like crop rotation, composting, and promotes environmental preservation, biodiversity, and produces rice grains free from harmful chemical residues.
Upon request, our cultivators processed the rice using two primary methods: unpolished and parboiled.
Parboiled Sona Masoori rice undergoes a unique method involving soaking, steaming, and drying the grains before milling. This process helps retain more nutrients compared to traditional white rice. Nutrients from the bran layer partially transfer to the endosperm during parboiling, resulting in rice richer in vitamins and minerals. Parboiled Sona Masoori rice also has a firmer texture and is less sticky than white rice.
Unpolished Sona Masoori rice retains its outer bran layer, which is rich in nutrients such as fiber, vitamins, and minerals. The bran layer gives the rice a slightly chewy texture and nutty flavor. Harvested grains are cleaned to remove impurities and then milled, retaining nutritious bran and germ layers unlike white rice.
In conclusion, unpolished and parboiled organic Sona Masoori rice offer distinct flavors, textures, and nutritional benefits, making them excellent choices for health-conscious consumers as a regular table rice.
