Paneer Sugarcane (SengKarumbu- Co 86032): A Sweet Symphony of High Yield, Superior Sugar Content, and Our Sustainable Cultivation Practices

The ‘Paneer’ sugarcane, ‘SengKarumbu- Co 86032’, finds its nomenclature rooted in the delightful sweetness it exudes. This specific cane variety was carefully chosen in collaboration with an organic farmer in Kunnathur Vivasayee Karuppasaamy. Its appeal extends beyond the palate, showcasing an intriguing combination of heightened sweetness and an augmented antioxidant profile. The rich and dark juice extracted from the blackish-purple canes contributes to this distinct quality as per the laboratory reports. 

Where the ‘Paneer’ sugarcane stands out with its high sugar content, indicative of a superior sucrose concentration in the juice. The antioxidant properties are attributed to potential bioactive compounds, possibly phenolic compounds, enriching the dark sugarcane juice.

Agronomically, the ‘Paneer’ sugarcane exhibits commendable ratoonability, allowing for multiple harvests. Sown in late August of 2022, this marks our second harvest, showcasing the resilience of this variety. The sugarcane breeding institute in Coimbatore released this variety by amalgamating notable features from thick, robust dark varieties and quality sucrose from its parent crops.

Noteworthy is the robust growth of buds arising from the last ratooning, underscoring the potential for sustainable cultivation practices when planned and executed well. In our pursuit of optimizing cultivation, we embraced an intercropping strategy. Alternating cultivation of soybean and black gram between sugarcane rows not only acts as an effective weed control measure but also establishes a symbiotic relationship, optimizing land use.

Daincha or sunhemp, was strategically grown along ridges, contributing to soil fertility management.. This practice enhances organic matter in the soil, fostering improved nutrient availability and a healthier soil structure, providing an ideal environment for the sugarcane crop.
